Revoiced JB2 pickups

We are fortunate to count Paul Gagon as a member here, so it seemed natural to give him a home to stretch out in and relax a little. Maybe exercise the grey matter and present a little history of the guitar and bass (amps too!) from his perspective as one of the eminent designers of our time.

Got questions? Great! Good questions might be, "What are the EQ mappings for the M Series preamps?" Or, "What was the thought process behind the MJ-4?" Troubleshooting questions should remain in the regular forums (he reads those too). Finally, please be mindful of how I feel about tech questions via PM or email.

Revoiced JB2 pickups

Good morning all!

I very recently became the owner of a used USA JB2, circa 2004. I also own a Trib JB2.

I was wondering when Mr. Gagnon revoiced the JB2 or JB pickups. I hear a difference between my two basses. I am wondering if I am hearing how it was before and after the revoicing.

Thank you!

The US JB-(x) pickups were and are made in Fullerton. The Tribute JB-(x) pickups are made to Paul's spec by an Asian manufacturer, probably Cort. That may contribute to a bit of the difference you hear. Then there are all the other things such as body & neck woods, construction technique, hardware. All of these things contribute to the basses sounding different.

To carry it a bit further: You could have two basses come off the assembly line serially right next to each other, same woods, same electronics, same people doing the build. They will sound a bit different.

To really know if the pickups are different, take resistance and inductance measurements on the two sets of pickups. If both measurements are 5-20% (or more) different from each other, they are surely different versions.
